Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese practice that uses needles to treat non-critical ailments.

The treatment of the human body in Traditional Chinese Medicine is holistic. The treatment is based on the concept of Qi, or life energy, flowing through the body via meridians. There are sites along the meridian network where the Qi can be accessed. Acupuncture practitioners aim to treat a variety of illnesses by inserting needles into a series of sites known as Acupoints. Acupuncture seeks to restore harmony between different bodily functions and processes. Balancing can be noticed even at the level of mind and emotions. Illness, a state of pain, or a state of mental imbalance, for example, is a sign of a disturbance of the harmony within the body. This disharmony can be treated by stimulating the acupuncture points located along the meridians, or acupuncture channels. Stimulation of the dots with thin needles elicits a response in the body that triggers processes to correct the prevailing imbalance.

The needles we use are thin, sterile and disposable. The treatment will involve at least 6 to 12 needles – sometimes more – depending on the conditionof the patient.

Science explains the mechanisms of action of acupuncture through the secretion of various neurotransmitters that affect mood, alertness, the gastrointestinal tract, falling asleep, and relieving pain, among other things. The acupuncture needle, when injected and stimulated, uses these neurological messengers to cause a chain of events that produces the desired reaction – often in a completely different part of the body than where the needle itself is.
